St. Stephen AME Church Interview

Faith, service, and community come together at St. Stephen AME Church, a cornerstone of Miami Gardens that is shaping lives and supporting local entrepreneurs in Florida

This month, we are excited to feature St. Stephen (“St. Stephen”), a long-standing faith-based institution that continues to uplift families while creating meaningful opportunities for small business owners in Miami Gardens. Below is our recent conversation with Pastor Kimberly R. Jones of St. Stephen:

  1. Tell us about your church and the role it plays in the Miami Gardens community. What drives your mission?
St. Stephen has always been more than a place of worship. It is a hub for faith, service, and community support. Our mission is driven by a commitment to uplifting families and guiding the next generation with hope and opportunity.
  2. You recently partnered with the Chamber to host the “Are You Lender Ready?” event. Why did you feel it was important to host this event at your church?
We believe access starts with proximity. Hosting this event in our church gave local entrepreneurs a familiar and welcoming space to connect directly with resources that can change the trajectory of their businesses.
  3. What do you believe churches and faith-based organizations can uniquely offer when it comes to supporting local business owners and entrepreneurs?
Faith-based institutions offer trust, access, and community connection. We meet people where they are spiritually and practically, and can bridge the gap between entrepreneurs and the resources they need.
  4. Have you seen any specific challenges that Miami Gardens business owners face when it comes to accessing resources like funding?
Yes. Awareness and access are two big challenges. Many business owners do not always know where to turn for help or feel they do not have the right connections. Events like this help remove those barriers.
  5. The Chamber believes in meeting people where they are, whether it is through schools, churches, or neighborhood events. How do you see this type of grassroots engagement making a difference in our city?
It makes all the difference. When we bring resources directly into neighborhoods, we remove intimidation and build trust. That is when true impact and lasting change can happen.
  6. What made you want to get involved with the Miami Gardens Chamber of Commerce?
The Chamber shares our vision of strengthening the community through connection, opportunity, and service. Joining forces was a natural step in expanding our impact.
  7. Are there any initiatives, programs, or partnerships you are particularly excited about launching with the Chamber or other local organizations?
We are excited about creating more pathways for youth and small businesses, from mentorship to workshops, that prepare our community not just to survive but to thrive.
  8. In your experience, what does it take to build real trust and collaboration between faith-based institutions and the business community?
It takes consistency, transparency, and a shared heart for the community. When both sides show up and follow through, trust is built naturally.
  9. What is one piece of advice you would offer to small business owners who are trying to stay hopeful and grow in tough times?
Stay rooted in your “why.” Challenges will come, but keeping your mission at the center will give you strength and clarity to keep moving forward.
  10. How can more people get involved, whether it is through your church, Chamber events, or simply supporting local entrepreneurs?
Start by showing up. Attend events, volunteer, mentor, shop local, and spread the word. Every small action builds momentum for a stronger Miami Gardens.

At St. Stephen AME Church, faith meets action in the most inspiring way: lifting families, empowering entrepreneurs, and strengthening Miami Gardens small businesses and local communities. We are proud to partner with St. Stephen to bring resources for small business owners, mentorship programs, and community-driven initiatives directly to our neighborhoods.

Together, we are creating lasting impact and opening doors for the next generation of leaders and business owners in Miami Gardens, Florida.
